45 views3 pages

Document Summary

Proteins on either side of the membrane have different functions. Allows for uptake of nutrients and disposing of wastes while protecting the cell: membranes are fluid, asymmetry. Proposes membranes are flexible and consist of proteins that move around lipids. Experiment conducted by david frye and michael edidin. Grew human cells and mouse cells then tagged the membrane proteins of each cell, the human proteins were dyed with red and mouse cells were dyed by green dye. Using a freeze fracture technique, using liquid hydrogen, a block of ice is frozen. The cells were fused and they were first divided into halves with each color. After sometime the colours were mixed meaning the proteins moved around. Consists of a head group attached to two long chains of carbon and hydrogen called fatty acid, a type of hydrocarbon. The head is a glycerol connected to a type of alcohol or amino acid.
