Document Summary

Plasma membrane: selectively permeable barrier that allows only certain substances to enter the cell including nutrients and eliminates waste products. Compartmentalized: cells have organs which are protected by membranes so the cell is compartmentalized. Fluid mosaic model: membrane are not rigid, but rather consist of proteins that move around within a mixture of lipid molecules with the consistency of olive oil. Mosaic refers to the various types of proteins in the membrane that are involved in transportation and attachment, electron transport, and signal transduction. Proteins move slower than lipids as they are much bigger. Some lipid and protein components of some membranes have carbohydrate groups linked to them, forming glycolipids and glycoproteins. Membrane asymmetry: proteins and other components that make up half of the bilayer are different from components that make up the other half. This reflects differences in the functions performed by each side of the membrane.
