Document Summary

Bio 1001 population growth continued march 22, 2017. You note that a population of bacteria that you are experimenting on initially showed exponential growth until it slows down then it is stable for a while until it crashes and all the bacteria are dead. No because you still have other factors affecting the population. Waste products will start to kill them off before the increase of density does. When it reaches carrying capacity growth slows down, doesn(cid:495)t mean that. Limit to population growth density dependent factors: limit to growth carrying capacity (k) of environment. That is because of these limiting factors: density, food resources, competition etc, k can change during different times (seasons) and space. There are different equations to calculate population growth (check slides: (k-n) is the number of individuals you can add before you reach k, (k-n)/k shows how much room we still have, varies b/w 0 and 1. Density dependent factors impact increases as population increases.
