Complications of ecf volume depletion: ecf volume= plasma+isf, blood volume= plasma + ___ If your ecf volume is reduced, this leads to low plasma volume and low blood volume, low co, and low bp. ?_ the system is trying to increase co to normal and arterial and venous resistance to normal. The reason for that is that the collapsed veins get distended: baroreceptors - sense that your bp drops (pooling blood in veins of legs) and less comes back to heart and the heart pumps less. Liver, kidney and gut don"t work well and you end up with reduced urine output: hypovolemia due to excessive urine output in diabetic. Treatment of reduced ecf volume: replaced loss nacl and water orally or by iv. Most patients who get reduced ecf volume, never make it to hospital because they die. They can be treated at home with food and fluids. In the hospital, we given them iv fluids.
