BIOL 2030 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Ketose, Aldose, Aldohexose
Document Summary
Car(cid:271)ohydrates: carbohydrates are bodies main source of energy, the macronutrients are carbohydrates, proteins & fats, carbohydrates could be simple or complex, simple carbs are digested & absorbed more quickly than complex. Monomers of carbohydrates are monosaccharides glucose, galactose, fructorse. Disaccharides are link ether link of two monomes lactose, sucrose, maltose. If glucose not needed immediately body stores it in liver & muscles as glycogen. If lack of sugars, then body uses protein for fuel. Hexose (6: most important monosaccharie is glucose hexose in aqueous solutions, monosaccharides exist as rings and linear if dry. Aldose or ketose if carbonyl at carbon 1 then aldose- aldehyde if carbonyly inbetween then ketose. Aldohexose is monosaccharide with aldehyde functional group & 6 carbons. Or could be named with suffice -ose for aldoses or -ulose for ketose. 4 major macromolecules: carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, nucleic acids (dna & rna) Carbs have general formula (ch2o)n. radio of c:h:o is 1:2:1.
