BIOL 3155 Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: Passive Immunity, Adaptive Immune System, Antigen
Document Summary
Difference between vaccination and passive immunization : antigens are substances that induce a specific immune response. Ab are proteins that bind specifically to ag. When we get vaccinated, we"re getting injected by viruses, or pieces of the virus. We"re trying to expose people to the antigen related to the virus through vaccination. Passive immunization : we"re injecting antibodies that can be used to capture the virus, as an urgent treatment for the disease. You can rotate the blood with a centrifuge and the cells will precipitate at the bottom and the serum or the plasma which contains antibodies, at the top, which can be purified even further. Plasma = serum, (eg. antibodies and serological tests = test for antibodies. Hiv or hep b for example) eg = b cells. Passive immunity = using ab in the plasma, active immunity + activating cells with ag.
