A reason to why assaults aren"t reported is because of (1) fear, (2) doubting that the police wont be able to help, and (3) the problem of double victimization: politics of definition and measurement. The definition of violence against women in the criminal code is essentially assault and sexual assault (crimes with a physical component) Psychological and emotional abuse (impact of verbal threats, manipulation, possessiveness, putting down emotionally and self esteem, etc. ) Difficulties of psychological and emotional abuse in the definition of violence against women; (1) how to measure these types of crime.
