CRIM 2652 Lecture 3: (KG) CRIM 2652 READING NOTES WEEK 3.docx
Document Summary
The cjs is a human enterprise, that consists of agencies, organizations, and personnel who deal with prevention of and response to crime. The cjs also includes: 1. crime prevention and crime reduction 2. The hearing of criminal cases by the courts 4. Sentencing, administration and enforcement of court orders 5. Parole and other forms of conditional release 6. Supervision and assistance for ex- offenders released into the community. In recent years restorative justice has been included into the cjs process as well. The cjs responds to law breaking with investigation (police), prosecution (trial/court/judge), and when appropriate punishment (jail, probation, community service, fines, etc. The cjs does not respond to every breach of the law, because only a fraction of crimes are sported to police, and of those crimes even fewer are actually brought to court or lead to a sentence or incarceration. Most cases are resolved with guilty pleas (often through plea bargains) and very few cases go to trial.
