CRIM 2653 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Missing Data, Semiotics, Media Studies
Document Summary
Slide 11: the academic or the investigators have professional identity and their purpose remains hidden. It could be completely covert or partial covert. This includes false identity and some people know your identity. Covert research is conducted without the knowledge or consent of people being studied. This method is frowned upon due to ethics. Universities don"t like covert research because they don"t like how consent is not given by the participants. In its active form, it depends on the deceit of participants. This is usually done by researchers taking on a particular role. You may take on the role of a protester if you are doing research on the g20 summit. Sometimes researchers do infiltrate groups such as cults, etc. They may introduce themselves as a researcher but the may hide their purposes. Sometimes this deceit is justified, depending on what is being researched.
