Not male and female but masculinity and femininity. They are relational; have intimate relation with one another; cannot define one another; social constructed and historically constructed do not stay the same over time; we do have some sense of what ideally we mean by these. Not unequal relationship to one another; tend to value qualities with those of masculinity then femininity; not valued in equal ways. Theories that try to explain this gender hierarchy. Biological theories evolutionary biology; try to explain this differentiation to reference to some unchangeable quality that is rooted in our bodies. Gender differentiation despite decades is that we continue to have profound gender differentiation and inequality; hasn"t produced much change. We actively achieve it. we need to think about it as having an audience.
