Writing/spelling landmarks: scribbling and drawing stage (preschool kind, draws a picture to tell a story/describes experience or environment. Invented spelling: child"s first attempts to transcribe spoken language into print symbols before learning the conventions of standard spelling. Pre-phonetic writing (preschool-grade 1): can write the letters of the alphabet and may be able to match letter name with written letter, words are spelled with random letters. Phonetic writing (kind- grade 1): can name and match all the letter names with the sounds they represent, matching beginning and end letter consistently with beginning and ending sounds of intended words, match all letters with sounds. Emergent writer (child) - generally up to kindergarten: understands writing carries a message, begins to use conventions of oral language, spelling word with one or more letters. Emergent writer (teacher): uses modeled, shared, and interactive writing, models correct oral language activities, think aloud strategies, phonemic awareness activities.
