The use of sidewalks: safety from the death and life of great american cities (1961) Author was thought to be more concerned about personal safety issues rather than state-of-the-art planning techniques. Her book attacked the urban renewal projects that were being carried out by powerful redevelopment bureaucrats. Urban renewal believed to be a process that served only to create instant slums. Safety for women and children comes from eyes on the street. Sense of personal belonging and social cohesiveness comes from well-defined neighbourhoods and narrow, crowded, multi-use streets. Urban vitality comes from residents" participation in intricate street ballet: diurnal pattern of observable and comprehensible human activity. Inner city communities were being increasingly abandoned to forces of poverty, decay and neglect. Sidewalks and streets are basic as circulation to the proper workings of cities. Streets and their sidewalks , the main public places of a city are its most vital organs.
