People pay to watch tv shows, movies, and sporting events commercial free. Hbo began asking people to subscrivbe to movies, sporting events. Fcc tried to shut it down in interest of broadcast companies. Provides commercial free programming for a monthly fee. Was expensive so not a lot of people bought it. 1980s- rise of home video had enormous impact on the fil and tv industry- revived the film industry- tv industry did not like it. Hbo responded by making their own movies- made for tv movies. Helped to maintain the audience they had- eventually began to distribute. 90s responded further by making their own television series. Because they are premium stations they are not subject to regulations- people pay for them and they are not broadcast over public airways- not subject to censorships. Hbo owned by time warner- showtime owned by cbs. Sopranos first aired 1999 on hbo created by david chase lonmgtime writer and producersnin american television.
