Film-Lecture 01  A number of factors came together in the 1980s that allowed the motion pictures to take off: 1) The Scientific Impulse- takes off in modern period; after 16th century; learn everything we can about science; begins with photography. 2) The Social Context-Industrialization, Urbanization and the need for cheap entertainment for new working class; come together in the late 19th century.  Eadweard Muybridge 1830:1904- The Horse in Motion, 1878. Thomas Alva Edison 1847-1931- Kinetoscope,1893. Auguste and Louis Lumiere- first exhibition of projected motion pictures, 1895.  Early Audiences in the Us - the first 10 or 15 years of the movie exhibition industry was characterized by working class patronage. - arrival of immigrants from South and Eastern Europe: the universal language of the silent film.  Early Ex
