Purpose of this course: to develop an understanding of the role that the mass media plays in society. Content: an overview of the history of the film and television industries in the us, a case study on the role of the mass media (especially film and tv) in the construction of empire and its maintenance. A number of factors came together in the 1890s that allowed the motion pictures to take off: the scientific impulse. Scientists seeking answer to how dynamic images can be recorded to be studied later on: the social context industrialization, urbanization and the need for cheap entertainment for the new working class. *eadweard muybridge (1830-1904) the horse in motion, 1878. Attempted to figure out if a horse had all four limbs off the ground; took 12 images. Allowed one person to view a movie at a time, didn"t have projecting yet. **auguste & louis lumiere first exhibition of projected motion picture, summer of 1895.
