Impact of world war ii and the cold war on westerns. The underdeveloped this world is like the old west - needs to be conquered and tames. The us and ussr compete to bring the benefits of their civilisation to this new frontier. Early television industry started recycling old low budget serial films, short films that were made and continued stories. They recycled these into new tv shows, they were very simplistic with recognizable heroes and villains. mid 50"s more sophisticated western shows started to appear. 25% of the shows were western in the 50s and early 60s. In the 50s and 60s the audiences were teens who weren"t interested in the western genre. The older people that were interested in western stopped going to the movies and watched it at home on tv. Number 1 show in the us from 1964-67. Season 1: ep 20; the fear merchants.
