Most important event of the 20th century. Collapse of three monarchies , germany, russia and austria. The sheer rush of events in 1914. The outcome was already there before any final decision. Inability of the old diplomatic to keep pace. All sides did not realize the sheer of the events of what was happening. Long term factors and short term disaster. Some genuinely thought that war was acceptable. Foreign trade doubled between 1870 - 1900. Britain still controlled 45% of the world industries. South slavs , serbians , croatians wanted independence from austria - hungary. Germany wanted its place in the sun. France wanted revenge for the past war and wanted alsace lorraine. Tensions in morocco , egypt (germans , french and british ) The alliances franco - russian alliance 1894. Germany, austria- hungary and italy triple alliance. Bismarck 1898 had warned them about the about the cause of war.
