Ancient near eastern archaeology (modern) started in 1798 with napoleon"s invasion of egypt; he came with a collection of scholars to record, document, and draw egyptian history. He inaugurates (his scholars) egyptian history and archaeology. Sir william matthew flinders petrie = a british scholar who went to egypt, and invented many new, modern archaeological method. Stratigraphy (relative dating using pottery and ceramic pots) The primary aims of these first modern biblical archaeologists. To illustrate the world of the bible (in a realist/realism way) Previous (pre-19th century) depictions of biblical times were romanticised. Most of the western archaeologists were christians, and explorers and plunders. It was a matter of prestige for americans, germans, and british to best document egypt themselves. Biblical archaeology is a. k. a syro-palestinian archaeology in scientific terms. Whoever controls the past controls the future. Between the world wars: americans, british, french, and jews. After wwii: palestinians, jordanas, israelis, dutch, french, british, canadians, americans, and germans.
