Solon & his reforms: was encouraged by his friends and allies to be tyrannical, however, he rejected this, as he did not want the power that came with tyranny, alleviation: Wanted to relieve the poor of their debts to the wealthier citizens of athens. Called it alleviation; was solon"s first measure. Consisted of the enactment of a law whereby all existing debts were rescinded, and whereby in the future it would be illegal for any leader to require the borrower"s own person as collateral (plutarch, 59) Other citizens who had become forfeit through debt, he brought back to athens and claims to have freed them (59) He said that he would leave the land the same, but cancel the debts; annoyed the rich because they were owed money, and annoyed the poor because he had yet to do anything about the redistribution of land.
