Lecture 10: the madness" of caligula: establishing power. He inherited his father"s support from the lower classes of rome. Upon tiberius" death, the praetorians favored him over tiberius" grandson, gemellus. He had glorious lineage, directly descended from augustus through his mother and from livia through his father: measures to build further support amongst the lower classes. He published an imperial budget, which helped to overturn the secrecy of tiberius" later years: also made early attempts to get praetorians and senators on side. He undertook to restore the senatorial prestige by granting the senators full authority to make decisions. But: early in his reign, caligula forced tiberius gemellus to suicide; executed some of gemellus" supporters. By 38, he killed off tiberius gemellus and the praetorian prefect marco: caligula"s principate: outline. Married that year (for the first time): ad 39 claimed to have discovered a plot against him.
