More brutal in this period: peasant revolts and mob violence, the great schism, heresy and dissent. Arguments against crisis: built beautiful buildings, wrote great texts. Chaucer and the canterbury tales: book production increasing, books for the laity produced, numerous universities founded, first artists and writers of the renaissance lived in this period. Was not only a time of crisis. All the institutions from the high medieval period keep going and new ideas emerge. Fought between england and france: every battle fought in france. Dominates the political history in this period. Not really one war but several: long series of campaigns broken by truces and peace. Some major battles but mostly about skirmishes and sieges: lots of looting, burning, and pillaging undefended towns in france.
