Document Summary

The role of staples: cod, furs, agriculture. Newfoundland: europeans had hostile relations with the beothuk which led to many brutal wars. Nova scotia: good relations until the british took over. Biota: newfoundland (british struggled because they never mastered the agriculture) versus nova scotia (french agriculturalists settled successfully) 70-80 000 french colonists in quebec and acadia. 15 000 000 settlers landed on the atlantic coast. The brits were also into the fur trade but were mostly into agriculture so there was a growing demand for land. The brits were beginning to close in on the territories around them which belonged to the native peoples. The 7 years war started two years earlier in north america than in europe: it was sparked by british settlers and french fur traders. The french were aware of britain"s desire for more land. The first conflict occurred in ohio valley. Ohio company (anglo-american) surveyed and sold the land on the border between french and british land.
