Woke up one morning surrounded by troops of his most trusted retainer, and he killed himself. *toyotomi hideyoshi (1536-1598): implemented various strategies to keep control over japan: Sword hunt in 1588: he made peasants give up all of their weapons (the peasants often used to aid warlords fight in battles) because he did not want peasants to be able to fight against him in battle. Guns were important because, unlike swords, it did not take peasants long to learn to use them. He said that if the peasants gave up all of their weapons then he would melt them and make a statue for the buddha; they would receive religious merits.
