Korea and vietnam: developments after separation from chinese empire. Following independence, the autonomous developments of korea and vietnam paralleled each other: sinicized elites, chinese model, script. But vietnam had non-east asian neighbours india and southeast asia cultural influences; also had room for expansion. After (fall of) han dynasty, 4th century ce: end of chinese rule. Introduction of buddhism (most important system of thought in korea after fall of han dynasty) Silla (668-918 ce); unified korea (resisted invading armies from tang dynasty) Resistance vs tang, tributary to tang instead, found chinese model useful. Adopted buddhism as main values + confucian classics in education. Chinese style government but bone ranks , no civil service exams since ranks were often hereditary. Chinese style names; but female rulers in some generations (in silla kingdom) Decline of silla (and broke up to original kingdom regions), 9th century ce later three.
