Louis xiv shared power with no one. He had people who owed him because he gave them royal titles. They were resented by grand nobles because they were picked from obscurity. Built up the largest army in european history. His reign began as a series of revolts. Revolts break out in 1648 (louis xiv is 4 years old) French crown had to raise money for war (taxes) Backlash: cardinal mazarin (louis" regent) was presented with a list of demands.
