People still spoke: coptic grew from the 3rd century as an alternative way to write down the egyptian language, though not as an adm. Language and latin played a minor role: population stayed the same at the start, no major changes, there were changes in the tax regime, poll tax were introduced, taxes in kinds (grain to ship to rome), status categories.
