Popular culture- what is shared by the population and not just the elite distinguish the culture that circulates among the people rather than what is consumed and commented on by the elite. There are arguments for dismissing these distinctions though the purpose to question the degree to which the brt population as a whole was engaged and aware and invested in empire. How to know how/why the society is infused with empire -> look at the culture produced and confused. Empire and popular culture: a persistent debate: to what extent- and in what ways- did the british empire have a cultural impact in britain, often set within a broader context of western culture"s relationship to the non-western world. Edward said and orientalism : also overlaps with questions about the legacies of empire/colonialism: i. e. does. The west depends on orientalism as a foil as a way of affirming its supremacy and superiority.
