HIST 3791 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Optic Disc, Intraocular Pressure, Pupillary Reflex
Document Summary
Opthalmoscope enlarges view of eye so you can inspect media (anterior chamber, lens, virtreous) and ocular fundas (internal surface of the retina) Directs a beam of light through the pupil to illuminate the inner structures. Hold up to eye level and braced firmly against the cheek and brow. Eyedrops not needed normally only for amd, and glaucoma (increased intraocular pressure). Should see a red glow fill the person"s pupil red reflex caused by reflection of ophthalmoscope light off the inner retina. When you see red reflex, move closer, and adjust lens to +6 take note of opacities in the media. (dark shadows, or black dots, interrupting red reflex. ) Use diopter settings as you move closer to the patient, if you both have normal vision it should be at 0. Use red lenses for nearishgted eyes, and black for far sighted eyes. Structures of the ocular fundas = optic disc, retinal vessels, general background, macula.
