Week 9: liberalism and its contradictions iii: workers and workers" rights. Basic aspects of workers" rights: workers" rights in a capitalist society are premised on the basic idea of free labor. " this is the notion that labor is free in choosing the place and condition of work. This means that work is tied to a wage level. This is in contrast to slavery and/or feudalism. In these systems, workers were tied to the land or the were seen as property: work is susceptible to the conditions of a free labor market. This means that labor" can be seen as being like any other commodity market. If labor is in high demand, overall in the economy or within certain industries, that translates into higher wages. Employment standards: according to the canadian government employment standards are the minimum standards established by law and define and guarantee rights in the workplace. This may also vary between industries and areas: vacation and vacation pay.
