Document Summary

Hrm 3410: training and development week 9. Mentoring has many benefits to prot g s but not every junior employee will have a mentoring partnership with a senior employee. Mentors can usually decide who they want to mentor and how much time they invest into it. Extent that a mentor perceives there are barriers to mentoring others e. g. lack of time, feelings of being unqualified to (cid:271)e a (cid:373)e(cid:374)tor, pro(cid:271)le(cid:373)s (cid:449)ith the (cid:373)e(cid:374)tor(cid:859)s o(cid:449)(cid:374) jo(cid:271) et(cid:272). If there are barriers then mentors might think that they have to put in a lot of effort to be a successful mentor. Exchange theory: suggests mentors who believe there are barriers would less likely help b/c of high risk of prot g failure and few possibilities of rewards. With barriers, mentors are less likely to choose a prot g with higher potential than those with fewer barriers.
