HRM 3440 Lecture 17 Notes Steinhorn
Introduction
Steinhorn discovered that the Hess information systems group had historically taken a
short-term approach to project planning.
The company had its IS personnel focused on supporting near-term initiatives and the
separate needs of each business division.
No one was analyzing how these smaller short-term projects were assisting the
company as a group at the highest level to meet its long-term objectives.
While this short-sighted approach served Hess adequately during the years that the
company was focused solely on the oil business, it became more important as the
company diversified for IS to assist in high-level long-term goals.
In the past decade, Hess has expanded into natural gas and electricity.
It as lea to Steiho that the opay’s IS iitiaties eeded to suppot ad

Bobby Cameron at Forrester Research says that Steiho’s pediaet is ot uiue.
The majority of new CIOs find themselves addressing the same problem.
This is the result of the recent trend of organizations moving to use IS in ways important
to the organization as a whole.
Although businesses have traditionally called upon IS to support various initiatives,
enterprise IS is a current force that drives business processes and spurs innovation.
With this in mind, more and more IS initiatives are aligned with high-level, long-term
organizational goals.
Steinhorn began by centralizing the data source that fed all information systems.
Sie IS pojets had ee oduted i eah usiess diisio, the diisios ee’t
sharing important information such as customer records and market information.
A central data store would eliminate data redundancy and improve data accuracy.
Next, Steinhorn set out to develop a five-year IS strategic plan. Once established,
Steinhorn had to work to gain senior management approval.
