General notes: written after theogony, this is a didactic epic meant to instruct; teaching. This means that the text trying to teach you something. In this case, its an agricultural manual, it"s also full of a lot of proverbial wisdom that hesiod is giving to his brother: two kinds of strife: evil and bad; and good for healthy competition. Perses, his brother, is trying to skate by and not do work: hesiod is very mysogenistic. Creation of pandora: the gifts between zeus and prometheus is to ruin each other. Fire gets stolen back and forth for the rst two gifts, and the last gift was pandora. She brings pain to men, everything bad that happened comes from pandora. Two more opposite brothers: pro (before) + metheus [metis: smarts; wisdom] = forethought . 2: epi (after) + metheus [metis: smarts; wisdom] = afterthought he received pandora.
