Hermes takes his lyre out and starts playing it, and apollo wants the lyre: hermes gives the lyre to apollo, in exchange for a whip, making hermes the master and god of cattle now. This poem is older than the works and days, and hesiod"s theogony. The poem begins with inspiration coming from the muses, in the form of a song.
