There are four different kinds (all needed for full causal explanation/to understand how it is things came to be: material cause: if you are going to construct something, you need materials (eg. need bricks, mortar, and wood for a house, efficient cause: you need to put the materials together (eg. you need a builder, bricklayer, formal cause: need plans to put steps in order. (eg. need a blueprint in order to build a house, final cause: need to know the purpose for constructing something in the first place (eg. why are you building this house?) Medieval thinkers (tied to the church: thought most important was final cause, why guided all inquiries, which assumes intellect behind investigation, thought the world is god"s creation and he gave it a purpose, thought everything had a purpose, thought growth/development needed a purpose since it is god given.
