Cold war at home: canada"s red scare: origins of the red scare: gouzenko affair. Intense fear of communism + cultural/social scares. This was not the first red scare (1900s) The first one was during the great depression. There was an intense afraid of communists + an internal revolution. Root cause = cold war (western vs. soviet union) Both sides thought that the other held aggressive imperialist power with a want to take over the world. Stated that the soviet embassy stole spy documents which contained names. Soviets planned an atomic bombing in canada. Feared these documents would effect us/canada + soviet union relations. Shocked how secrets were spread to the soviet union as it was out ally. Stealing state secrets led to social disorder and brainwashing: social impact of the red scare. Politicians, media warning the soviet union"s communist subversion canadians. Anti-communist propaganda ( communism = threat to canada ) The removal of communist"s civil rights: public sector, civil servants.
