KINE 1000 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness, Triceps Brachii Muscle, Bench Press
Document Summary
Decrease in muscle mass & strength in upper and lower extremities. Therefore the decrease we see in the elderly can be seen early on in the adult life (20s). These changes aren"t linear they depend on physiological and behavioural changes: initial level of effort- so an increased demand of muscle is needed, neural stimulation and activation- amount of muscle. Greater the intensity the more the adaptation therefore the more improvement (usually) hypertrophy. ^ graph is of a bench press and on the left side- pectoralis muscle right- triceps. Overload= increasing the amount of total fibres to be used. Rm= repetition max -> we did this in the lab. To improve strength the interval between sets should be longer. To improve shaping- the time between sets can be shorter. Isometric contraction changes aren"t transferable or generalize to other kinds of movement but you see the greatest amount of improvement.
