Don"t be gay, dude: how the institution of sport reinforces homophobia. Kelsey lucyk analyzes how the media and the institution of sport have entrenched certain ideals about masculinity meanwhile reinforcing homophobic attitudes towards gender roles in sports. This article focusses primarily on analyzing canadian sports and makes use of the concept of muscular christianityto explain hegemonic masculinity as found in the canadian institution of sport. Since there are no visible differences between gay and straight athletes, gay athletes are often framed according to their homosexual behaviour. By depicting homosexual athletes as oversexed and erotic, media images illustrate homophobia in sport: gay athletes are not serious about sports, or they are locker-room voyeurs that just want to have sex with their teammates.
