Document Summary
Cardiovascular disease effects a lot of people: up to age 85, men are more likely, exercise increases hdl and decreases ldl, family history, race/ethnicity, age, sex, male pattern baldness. Preventing heart problems: stop smoking, physical activity, and diet. Atherosclerosis: development of fatty streaks in bv (blood vessel, caused by deposition of cholesterol in lining of bv wall, stops blood from running smoothly in vessels, causing heart to work harder to pump blood. Lipoprotein profile: total cholesterol = ldl + hdl, cholesterol + triglycerides are carried inside lipoprotein, triglycerides can also be carried in blood by albumin, cholesterol comes from food and your liver, packages cholesterol as ldl or hdl. Extra ldl is filtered by hdl, but only so much can be taken by hdl. Whatever the hdl can"t pick-up, it is left in the arteries. Leftover ldl enters the smooth muscle (1) White blood cells take up oxidized ldl and become foam cells (2)
