KINE 1020 Lecture Notes - Lecture 43: Stationary Bicycle, Vo2 Max, Lactic Acid
Document Summary
Rer goes up with exercise due to increased co2 production relative to o2 consumption. Bicarbonate (released form kidneys) buffers and neutralizes lactic acid and produces. Ventilator threshold: the point in which the ventilation increases disproportionately to the o2 uptake. At intensities higher than tvent there is an abrupt increase in blood lactate levels and the individual cannot maintain steady state exercise. More trainable than vo2 max occurs at 50-60% of vo2 max in untrained endurance individuals. Occurs at 80-90% of vo2 max in elite, world-class endurance athletes. Allows the individuals to be capable of maintaining a higher level of steady state during the endurance exercise. A better indicator of endurance performance than vo2 max, as it tells you how much of your vo2 max you can use at a steady state. Cardiorespiratory fitness: frequency of training, optimal 3-5 days/week, no benefits with < 2 days, benefits will plateau at 5 days.
