Motives can range from autonomous (most self-determined) to controlling (least self-determined: basic needs theory, motivation is determined by how well the situation meets the athletes needs. Three needs: autonomy, competence and relatedness (cid:1) (cid:1) (cid:1) Amotivation extrinsic motivation . Individual perceives no connection between actions and outcomes. No matter how much i exercise or eat healthy, it doesn"t make any difference . Person is unable to see connection between behaviour and outcome. External regulation: actions performed to achieve external demand, reward, or avoid punishment, i exercise because everybody says i should/need to , person exercises because it is externally controlled by society, least self-determined of extrinsic motivation. Introjected regulation: actions to avoid negative emotions (guilt, i exercised today because i felt guilty for eating mcdonalds last night .
