21 views3 pages

Document Summary

Gerontology has been studied more in the recent years because life expectancy has increased. Baby boomers is the largest cohort in canada than anywhere else in the world. In the 1980s aging was seen in a negative way. In 1998 and 2000s the views started to change and become more positive. In canada we are prepared to deal with the aging population. In mcmaster there is a study looking at aging; lots of research going into it right now. Geriatrics: medicine dealing with diseases of aging. Their medical problems may be complex because there may be many diseases occurring together. Canada does not have many doctors that focus on geriatrics. In ontario they are paid per visit; older people take longer to treat and so less patients are seen in a day. Stereotypes: forgetful, frail, weak, become invisible, old people don"t like young people, unfashionable clothes, etc.
