KINE 4010 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Diminishing Returns, Vo2 Max, Sarcopenia
Document Summary
So vo2 goes down because heart rate max goes down: b) mitochondria content in muscle goes down with age. Amount of extraction of oxygen in muscle goes down: c) amount of muscle mass goes down with age (frailty), less muscle; less muscle mass with age is called sarcopenia. Due to neurons muscle cell death called apoptosis. 20% due to 2 reasons: a) body composition, women have more body fat and less muscle mass then men do. So less muscle mass then that contributes to lower vo2: b) hemoglobin, female have lower value of hemoglobin. Makes difference in oxygen transport in vo2: can training make a difference, with any age if you want to become more fit and increase vo2 you can always shift up. So yes it exists you can improve with training. Once up it"ll take longer for it to come back down. But inevitably it does go down just up to you to help elongate it.
