2) Warlord Rule of China, 1912-1949
➢ Attempts to form a national Republican government failed after
1912 and civil war ensued
➢ They call it the Warlord period bc it run by powerful Chinese
citizens who had access to war arms
➢ Power Kuomintang movement emerged in the South of China
under the eventual leadership of Chiang Kai-shek
➢ Chiang, with the help of the Chinese Communists under Mao
Tse-tung, eventually established a national government at
Nanking before Chiang split with Mao in 1927
➢ China went to war with Japan in 1937
➢ After 1945, Mao and the Communists fought Chiang’s forces,
emerging triumphant by 1949 and establishing the People’s
Republic of China
➢ Chiang forced to flee mainland China to set up a government
on Taiwan
➢ The economic results of this period of internal chaos are
