MGMT 1050 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Radio Wave, Stellar Black Hole, Mariner 2
Document Summary
Ch 8 - discoveries about the solar system. Part one - william hershel (1738 - 1822) and the discovery of uranus: an amateur astronomer who built the largest telescopes of his time. Made his own telescopes with his sister caroline. Telescope was 40 ft. long with primary mirror: 1. 2 m. His large telescopes allowed him to see deeper into space and produce larger images of the celestial bodies. Longer the tube, more magnified the image: made the celestial bodies easier to see. Originally built because he wanted to detect the parallax of stars. Stellar parallax still hadn"t been detected because stars were just so far away: while cataloguing stars to aid the search for stellar parallax, he became the 1st person to discover a planet. Hershel wanted to detect the parallax of stars. Never detected the parallax, but discovered a new planet in his research. Sister, caroline: first woman to discover a comet: discovered several galaxies, first paid female scientist.
