NATS 1540 Lecture Notes - Lecture 58: Oral Mucosa, Maxillary Sinus, Frontal Sinus
Document Summary
Sinuses press over frontal sinus below eyebrows + over maxillary sinus below cheekbones. Transillumination used when suspect inflammation, hold light (dark room) under superior orbital ridge against frontal sinus area (can also be used against maxillary sinus) Means that light is shining through air in healthy sinus. Inspect lips for colour, moisture, cracking or lesions. Individuals with darker complexion, may normally have bluish lips and a darker line on gingival margin. Note any diseased, absent, loose, or abnormaly positioned teeth. Compare # of teeth with expected # for person of that age. Look white, straight, evenly spaced, clean and free of debris or decay. Occlusion in the back is the upper teeth resting. Sinus areas tender to palpation in persons with chronic allergies and acute infections (sinusitis) An inflamed sinus filled with fluid does not transilluminate. **asymmetric is not a reliable sign of sinus inflammation many healthy sinus will not transilluminate**
