Prenatal diagnosis: purpose of prenatal screening is to identify fetal risk of chromosome or genetic conditions (when meiosis does not function properly) which may affect the health of fetus or baby. Genetic conditions such as when the gene is carried through generations: to provide clear concise information for parents on any risks identified, to provide options for parents early in pregnancy when termination may be considered. Delayed lethal = 100% fatal after birth: tests for chromosomal abnormalities such as down syndrome. Genetic disorders such as tay- sachs or cystic fibrosis. Neural tube defects (ntds) such as spina bifida. It is unclear whether or not the techniques used to test for abnormalities cause spontaneous abortion: types of prenatal testing: non-invasive (uterus is not entered) blood testing of pregnant woman to identify possible risks. Invasive procedures to examine fetal cells: cvs (chorionic villus. Usually tests for down syndrome(looks for protein called alpha feto protein).
