Net neutrality (controversy)- resides in north america, probably impacted your use of the internet, how much we get and how much we pay for it. Controls top level domain names (tldn)- . com, . org, . ca, . edu (the last name of any website) Tldn has importance, allows the user where the info is coming from. com- commercial/business, . org- organization, . edu- education, . us- u. s. , u. k- Purpose of tldn- 1) an idea/better indication of the host and 2) better idea of traffic. Icann has total and utmost control over tldn, which ones are accepted, rejected, should be brought out. Has been criticized: supposed to be non-profit (free from government ties) up until the last year had strong ties with the u. s government (u. s. commerce) Lacks transparency- icann decision making has been closed, no one knows who belongs to icann and who"s involved. Supposed to be over-looking systems over the world, but tldn primarily focuses on the english language.
