In our previous discussion, we looked at how criminal or illegal activities are increasingly monitored in cyberspace. Next, we will look at some of the organizations responsible for controlling the internet, and at current issues pertaining to internet regulation: icann. Icann (internet corporation for assigned names and numbers) Non-profit organization founded in 1998 is the technical caretaker of the internet. Biggest responsibility: administers, activates and controls top level domain names (tldns) Examples of tldns include: . com, . org, . ca, . edu. Dns translates an ip address (usually a series of nine digit numbers given to a host computer) into a domain name and vice versa. This is how you id hosts on the internet and co-ordinate internet traffic. Biggest criticism of icann: supposed non-profit, non-partisan organization is controlled in large part by american government (especially us dept of. Commerce) because of memorandum of understanding between these groups in relation to joint design development, operation of root server system, oversight of adding tldns.
