Document Summary
*understanding goals: - three basic types of spectra: spectrum. The way light tells us what things are made of. Lights tell us the temperature of planets and stars. Light tells us the speed of a distant objects. If you take a light and break it up, it consists of colors. A separation (dispersion) of light into its constituent colors (wavelength or frequency) Red is longer wavelength, blue is shorter (how bright is it at any colors) *three basic types of spectra (combination of spectra of astrophysical objects) + we see bright emission line at a specific wavelength but not other light. + we see dark absorption line where the clouds has absorbed lights of wavelength: continuous (continuum) spectrum. A common (incandescent) light bulb (which consumes lots of energy) spans visible wavelength without interruption. Tell how hot it is, the temperature: emission line spectrum (neon light)
