NATS 1870 Lecture Notes - Lecture 19: Soap Bubble, Light Beam
Document Summary
What happens when 2 light beams meet + interact with each other. If light sources are in phase resultant light wave is 2x the amplitude (constructive interference) If light sources are out of phase light wave cancelled (destructive interference) So: light areas in fringe pattern -> constructive interference dark areas in fringe pattern -> destructive interference. Not seen -> proves wave-like nature for light. For this point on the wall distance travelled by beam from slit 2 is longer than distance from slit 1. When the two light beams meet at the wall. D1 -> 3 wavelengths d2 -> 5 wavelengths. Here, the waves from slit 1 & slit 2 arrive at wall out of phase -> destructive interference. * key point in interference is that 2 light beams have travelled different distances. Distance difference" allows one light beam to become out of phase with the other.
